General information:

Formed in November 1943 as part of No.8 (PFF) Group, 627 Squadron were detached to No.5 Group, Bomber Command in April 1944 where they specialized in developing highly accurate ‘divebombing’ target-marking techniques, achieving high degrees of accuracy. During 1944-45, 627 Squadron operated by day and night, and their Mosquito aircraft were painted in Day Fighter colours with ‘invasion’ markings after D-Day, June 6th 1944. Mosquito KB267 was personally selected by the legendary ‘Dam Buster’ Wing Commander Guy Gibson and flown by him on his last operation, as ‘Master Bomber’ to a raid on Rheydt, Germany on 19th September 1944. On the return flight from Rheydt, for reasons which have never been firmly established the Mosquito crashed near the Dutch town of Steenbergen. Gibson and his co-pilot Squadron Leader James Warwick died in the crash and are buried in the town’s cemetery. Although no photographs of KB267 are known to exist, fragments of fuselage discovered at the crash site indicate that it was carrying these full markings.

From the Corgi Site:

Towards the end of May 1943, three Hawker Typhoons were sent for operational flight trials in the Middle East.  219 Group RAF, who were responsible for finding a lodger unit for these service trials decided finally upon 451 Sqn RAAF. The Typhoon would have been an exciting follow-on to the Hawker Hurricane IIc then operated by the squadron. 451 Sqn at LG.106 near Idku under command of Sqn Ldr J Paine, having been recently withdrawn from frontline operations, would provide personnel for the tests.

From the Corgi Site:

The prototype Do17 was built in 1934 in response to a Lufthansa requirement for a 6-passenger mailplane. However the design was rejected, partly due to the slim fuselage which would later give the plane its nickname of ‘The Flying Pencil’. Nevertheless military interest was shown in the design and it was developed as a medium bomber and long range reconnaissance aircraft. The Do17Z was a development of earlier marks designed specifically as a medium bomber. It was used extensively on all fronts during WWII although by 1942 it started to be withdrawn from mainline duties. KG3 was a Luftwaffe bomber wing whose units participated on all of the fronts in the European theatre until it was disbanded in September-October 1944. It operated two of the major German bomber types; the Dornier Do17 and the Junkers Ju88. This model represents an aircraft of 7 Staffel, KG3 based on the Russian front during the winter of 1941/42. It wears a hastily applied overall wash of white camouflage, well suited to the severe winter weather on the eastern front.

General information:

Boeing B17F serial number 41-24577, better known as ‘Hells Angels’, was the first US 8th Air Force B17 to complete 25 missions on May 13th 1943. The following day, Captain Irl E.Baldwin the legendary pilot of ‘Hells Angels’, became the first officer from the 303rd BG (H) to complete a combat tour of 25 missions after a raid on Kiel, Germany. Taking its name from a 1930 Howard Hughes movie, ‘Hells Angels’ was assigned to the 358th Bomb Squadron, part of the 303rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) based at Molesworth in Huntingdonshire, England from 1942-45. In January 1944 the 303rd BG(H) adopted the name of ‘Hells Angels’ in tribute to one of its most famous planes. After successfully completing 48 missions, Boeing B17F ‘Hells Angels’ returned to the United States on January 20th 1944 to embark on a morale boosting tour of war production factories. When the tour finished in May 1944, ‘Hells Angels’ was transferred to the USAAF for use as an aircrew training aircraft before being scrapped in August 1945.
